Digital Mastering
Mastering today is done digitally,
therefore it is referred to as Digital Mastering.
This simply means that the recording is done using
computers and software instead of analog gear.
Audio can however receive Digital Mastering and
still be run through some analog gear, and vice versa.
Digital Mastering tends to be much
easier to work with and understand.
One of the reasons for this is the fact that
computers allow you to see what you are doing.
Many software programs give you the
opportunity to see what you may not hear.
This is a great advantage in an
imperfect listening environment.
And no matter how good your room is,
it is never going to be perfect.
Mastering Includes
Overall equalization for clarity and
consistency throughout the song or album.
Making volume levels consistent and
competitive, without being over-bearing.
Editing of content
Providing better separation between instruments,
Multi-Band Dynamics Processing,
Ensuring that the audio will translate
well between different playback systems.
Provide proper fades and spacing.
Noise removal,
DC Current Removal,
Sequencing of the songs (if needed).
Provides an objective "ear".
Special attention in any area
(such as noise reduction)
Special enhance CD Mastering
is essentially the stage
of the audio production
process that enhances digital
audio before replication,
duplication or radio play.
Through creative compression, equalization
and limiting, your digital audio is
brought up to "radio" "CD" standards.
Mastering creates better separation
between all instruments, including vocals.
It can allow the kick drum to have more punch,
make the guitars sound fatter
or the voice to blend a little better with the mix.
CD Mastering gives your mixes more
clarity, consistency and presence.
If you compare your music to your favorite CD
you will probably find that your pre-Mastered
mix sounds sonically inferior.
Your mixes may not be loud enough,
or the vocals may be buried in
the mix or to up front.
Almost all pre-Mastered recordings need
Mastering to fix these and other problems.
And if the mix is perfect,
it will still need Mastering to make the
volume levels competitive and consistent.
